Now to create a location to store your user list. This file should be located above the root of your web site if at all possible. If not, you site will still be secure because this is a "hidden" file and the passwords are stored encrypted. Create the directory that will store your userfile (access) and then create a file and call it .htpasswd. You need to set the permissions on the directory at 777 and the permissions on the file at 666 (using the chmod command as illustrated in the last step) Typically you cannot save a file unless there is some content in the file, if this happens you can add a comment line by using the pound key and then some text.
